“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose Word I praise. This I know, that God is for me. In God whose Word I praise, in the Lord whose Word I praise.” Psalm 56:3-4, 9-10 ESV
I sat in the small, simple, humble room observing my surroundings, all 5 senses deeply drawing in the moment. The rain fell softly outside pattering the broad, green banana leaves that flanked the open doorway. In this small Mexican mountain village, our work had brought us to the home of this woman who desired to know more about the Jesus we had professed to her weeks before. And so we came. And as we sat with her, desperate in our attempts to make salvation in Christ as simple as possible in her heart language of Spanish, she simply seemed more confused by the simplicity of the message we shared. Sensing her desire to know the pure and simple truth about God, Jesus, heaven, hell, and eternity in her heart, I simply did the best thing I knew to do…I handed her a Bible and challenged her. If you truly want to know more about God, read His Words.
How did David know? How did David know, have confidence, and even boast about his faith in God throughout the numerous tumultuous events of his life? Did he have a hunch? Was it blind hope? Or just expectational wishes directed towards heaven? No, you find David’s true answer throughout his poetic Psalms and especially concentrated here in the 56th Psalm. David knew just what the Word of God was. And He knew just exactly what to do with it. You see, when the trials and tribulations of this life confused, confounded, and threatened David, he didn’t try to figure them out on his own. He didn’t use his own limited human logic or reach out for other limited human logic that will emptily and readily promise their own answers and solutions. No, David went to the very Words of the One that created the world in which he was experiencing his trials. You see, as David sought to know more about his life and his world, he knew he needed to know more about God. And to know more about God, His plan, His ways, and His love…you need to read the book He wrote.
It was rather heart-breaking for me to see that woman so desperate to know the truth when copies of that truth rested calmly and inertly in the backpack that rested upon my shoulders. And the same story resonates all around this world today. Whether it be in a mega city, a rural backroad farming community, or a remote mountain village in the far reaches of southern Mexico, people are desperate in their search to find the truth in this world. Yet pure truth is elusive indeed. For those that have not found it, the evil one that opposed that truth will not allow it to be easily found. For this world that the evil one currently controls, is quick to tell its inhabitants that there are many truths, and whichever one you prefer promises to satisfy your search. Yet just as the name satan signifies (liar), it is a lie. There is only one pure truth (John 14:6). In fact, a closer examination ironically reveals that if there is indeed more than one pure truth, then there is none. For pure truth cannot be separated. Pure truth cannot exist in competition with itself.
Today, if your search for the truth has continually left you desiring more, I challenge you to engage the Word of God. Read it, study it, consume it. For if your heart genuinely desires to know more about the one and only God of this universe, His only Son Jesus Christ whom was sacrificed and raised again to save God’s created mankind from their sin, and the heavenly home that God desires for all of His creation…you must simply open up God’s book and learn more about Him. It is as simple as pie to know God, but unless you eat some of that pie, you will never know the true taste.
