Another beautiful morning here in Hong Kong as I gaze out at the high rises and mountains beyond. The dorm rooms we're in have a nice little desk & it's been a blessing to call this home for my 5MC's each morning.
Another great day at camp yesterday as the students prepared & presented community projects they will be doing when they get back home. The sunshine camp motto is "building servant leaders of integrity" and it's beautiful to see the transformation in these young lives as they're being taught to put others before themselves. A lesson this world needs so greatly.
This morning in my 5MC I'm in Luke chapter 12 verses 13-21 where I find Jesus addressing materialism and greed. Verse 15..."take care, and be on your guard against all covetnousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
There was a time in my life where unfortunately I could say the abundance of "collecting things" was a problem. I love to collect things whether it's vintage Hot Wheels, coke bottles or classic aloha shirts. The problem becomes how much is enough? The collections grew over the years as I was always looking to add. The problem arose when I realized I didn't have a few "collections" but many. I was surrounding myself with things instead of people. Centered in myself and not centered on people. Focused on myself and things, not focused on the kingdom of God.
When Marge & I got the call to go to Maui we also got the call to liquidate the "collections", right the ship & make ourselves extremely mobile. We had an estate sale & sold it all & went to Maui to serve others with 6 bags between us. It was life changing to part with all the stuff that society tells you has value, worth & adds value to who you are.
This is what we're being taught here, don't store up for yourself here on Earth but love Him & invest in others...thats God's plan for your life.
Resist investing in the next hottest gadget that you think will bring you pleasure but instead invest in a life and experience the true joy that comes from selfless, unconditional love...the love that is shown to us perfectly by Jesus.
Share the love my friends!
