Nehemiah 3 - Many Hands

“Next to them Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, goldsmiths, repaired. Next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, repaired, and they restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.” Nehemiah 3:8

There’s an old saying, “many hands make light work.” The idea that a grand task is made easier by many hands shouldering the same burden. I’m sure you’ve experienced this at some point in your life as you’ve been toiling away at a large job only to have someone saunter up beside you and join in. Then only to see a few more join in. Before long that monumental job was whittled down by the many hands all taking out small chunks. There is no difference is the work of the Lord. The work of the Lord involves a myriad of tasks, all of which need many hands to make the work manageable, enjoyable, and enriching for the hands toiling. So far in the book of Nehemiah we have seen Nehemiah, a layman, a cupbearer to the king of Babylon, receive a call from God to rebuild the massive broken walls of Jerusalem. At 2.5 miles of total wall, this was a huge backbreaking job to say the least. As we get to chapter 3 though, we see God assemble a crack team to tackle the gargantuan job, and as we do, we see people that you would never expect to be repairing a massive rock wall. We see goldsmiths hoisting stones for the Lord. We see perfume-makers grouting joints. We see local politicians laying brick. We see foreign politicians nailing lumber. We see daughters joining the men in the backbreaking labor. We see Levite priests, from the lowest rank all the way to the high priest, bolting gates in place. We see shop owners and merchants hauling supplies. You see, the work of God is not just for a pastor or a missionary. The work of God is not just for a seminary professor or church staff. The work of God is for everyone that has called upon Jesus as their Savior. And the work of the Lord is a great wall indeed. Did you know that one of the biggest jobs in the kingdom of God is simply giving out His Word? The Word of God contains the gospel of Jesus Christ and within the pages of scripture lies the miracle of salvation for those that hear it and believe in faith. Today are you giving out the Word of God? As a Christian are you even spending time in the Word of God? God is desiring to use you today to help others find the abundant life of Christ. God is desiring to use you to help get out the power of His Holy Word to the world He has placed you in. If you’re not in a daily study of His Word, start today. Start by commiting to take the 5 minute challenge. (The5MC) Commit to spend at least 5 minutes a day in the study of His Word. Commit to do this for 30 days in a row. And all during this challenge, start telling people what God has revealed to you through His Word. For you see, the power of God’s Word lies not with us, but with God. All we must do is sew the seed of His Word and God will handle the growth. Many hands do indeed make light work, join in the work of God today and see the power of His Word become a mighty wall in our broken world.

“And Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Mark 16:15
